Jakob Dreyer Unveils His Most Personal Album Yet with Roots and Things
German-born, New York-based bassist and composer Jakob Dreyer presents Roots and Things, his third album as a leader and a compelling new chapter in his artistic journey. Released on the Fresh Sound New Talent label, the recording showcases Dreyer’s distinctive compositional voice through a vibrant program that balances hard-swinging originals, lyrical ballads, and thoughtful interludes.
For this project, Dreyer assembled an exceptional quartet featuring acclaimed vibraphonist Sasha Berliner, Grammy-winning saxophonist Tivon Pennicott, and sought-after drummer Kenn Salters. Replacing the piano with vibraphone creates a fresh, transparent sonic landscape, allowing the group’s rich interplay and improvisational chemistry to shine throughout the album.
Roots and Things features fifteen original compositions alongside a modern reimagining of the Rodgers & Hart classic With a Song in My Heart. Inspired by the great traditions of jazz while embracing a contemporary aesthetic, the music reflects Dreyer’s deep respect for melody, groove, and collective improvisation. The album’s title refers to the bassist’s central role in music—providing the „roots“ that support and inspire everything above.
Originally from Germany, Dreyer studied in Hamburg and Amsterdam before relocating to New York City in 2014, where he earned a Master’s degree from the City College of New York under the guidance of John Patitucci. Since then, he has become an active presence on the city’s jazz scene, performing with artists including Steve Wilson, Anna Webber, Nils Landgren, Dusko Goykovich, and Delfeayo Marsalis, while appearing on more than thirty recordings as a sideman.
With Roots and Things, Dreyer delivers his most mature and personal statement to date. Blending sophisticated compositions, inspired improvisation, and the unmistakable energy of a world-class ensemble, the album confirms him as one of the most distinctive bassist-composers of his generation. Rooted in tradition yet forward-looking in spirit, Roots and Things is a captivating addition to today’s contemporary jazz landscape.
