Blas Rivera Quartet/Todd Clouser Group „double bill“ 20. September 2018

This is a quartet of five instruments formed by the musicians Blas Rivera from Argentina (piano and sax), David Chew from England (violoncello), Otto Hanriott from Brazil (bandoneón) and David Johnson from Germany (violin). They interprate Blas Rivera compositions recorded in Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Buenos Aires, with artists from many different countries, along with songs from other composers as Astor Piazzolla and J.S. Bach.
Tangos, milongas, candombes, forrós and jazz. Rhythms that influence these musicians and are present in this work, a nice mixture of classical music, tango and jazz.

Blas Rivera Quartet makes a revision of rhythms and sonorities from South America and other places of the world, integrating with diversity.
Popular music being treated with erudite technics. Combined colours from instruments which were born erudite –sax and bandoneón – and they became popular. Instruments like violoncello and piano that are now part of the popular music scene.
Blend of lands, Argentina, Brazil, England. Blend of languages, flavours, history, exiles and then returns as part of this musical mosaic.

Creativity and improvisation are elements in the repertoire giving light to new songs such as “Hasta que vuelvas” (about great pain and abandonment), “Milonga Sudaca” (sudaca is how south Americans are called in Spain), “Nocturno” (music dedicated to Federico Fellini) and “Canción para conquistar a la bailarina”, all composed by Blas Rivera. The program includes some classics such as the unforgettable music of Astor Piazzolla, “Oblivion” adapted for the violoncello in counterpoint with the bandoneon and the “Aria for the forth string” of J.S. Bach, in a Jazz-tango version.
